As we close out 2021, we have to acknowledge those who have kept us entertained throughout the year. Props go out especially to the newest faces in the entertainment industry. We acknowledge how tough it must be to be new to stardom – to have everybody suddenly scrutinizing every aspect of your life.

However, these ZAlebs have handled it well, and we couldn’t be more proud of them. These are some celebrities who rose to fame in 2021.

Uncle Waffles

Nobody has shaken the country in their first year of fame half as much as Uncle Waffles did in 2021. She first rose to fame when a video of her mixing and dancing to Kabza de Small and Young Stunna’s international hit song Adiwele went viral, so much so that even Drake was in awe of her.

Unfortunately for her, her stardom has attracted unwarranted levels of hate. The young star trends on Twitter at least once a week, and not usually for good reasons. It would seem like Mzansi has turned bashing her into a favourite pastime, much to the annoyance of her fans.

But it has not all been bad, as she has found international acclaim either way. She has played gigs all over Africa, and how many can say they did that in their first year of fame? She has also found some loyal celebrity friends and defenders like Pearl Thusi, Mihlali Ndamase, DJ Lamiez Holworthy and Cassper Nyovest, whose guidance will no doubt help her establish herself in the cruel world of ZAlebville.

Uncle Vinny

Speaking of unconventional names for young talents, Uncle Vinny is another new entrant in the scene, and he too has already travelled the continent for his craft.

He first became known because of the Uncle Vinny Challenge on TikTok, which garnered a lot of attention, including that of local bigwigs. Now he moves in Amapiano circles, and was even part of the team that graced the Amapiano Festival in Ghana. Clearly, he mastered making big moves immediately.

Slik Talk

There was nary a more controversial public figure like Slik Talk in 2021. Establishing himself as a YouTuber, he chose quite the interesting niche to focus on celebrity hate.

Slik Talk is one of the most talked-about critics, and it is ZAlebs who bear the brunt of his criticisms. From body-shaming Kamo Mphela to calling Dj Maphorisa a simp, there are probably at least 5 people in Mzansi who would like to square things with him. This is why many ZAlebs were quite excited to see Cassper Nyovest beat the daylights out of him in a boxing match they had recently.

Whatever your feelings about the YouTuber, we can’t deny that he has made big waves since he entered the entertainment scene, and all in such a short while.

Young Stunna

When Kabza De Small introduced his newest protege Young Stunna, some were skeptical about his talent and staying power in the industry. But over the course of 2021, he has proven that he has what it takes to make it big and long-term, with hits like Bopha and Adiwele, which are now party staples, both locally and internationally.

Tamia Louw Mpisane

Probably one of Mzansi’s favourite topics towards the end of 2021, Tamia Louw now Mpisane rocked the nation when she got married to footballer, rapper and legacy rich kid seemingly Andile Mpisane out of nowhere.

The marriage was rather controversial for multiple reasons. First, nobody knew who she was, and many were unaware that she was even dating Andile. Second, Andile had been in a long on-and-off relationship with his baby mama Sithelo Shozi. And third, they got engaged and married all on the same day, making many question what the rush was about.

In her short time in the spotlight, though, Tamia seems to be winning over the hearts of many. With her winning smile, Mamkhize’s public acceptance and approval, and the fact that she and Andile seem to be really happy together, she has garnered a lot of interest, and it looks like she is set to be a Mzansi favourite in the days ahead.

Sihle Sithole, who you may know as Blxckie, has already made his mark as a rapper, songwriter and music producer. Although he began his rise to fame during lockdown in 2020, he reached the top in 2021, finally going mainstream with his hit song Big Time Shlappa.

He has since collaborated with international superstars, including Nasty C, Davido and CKay, which is proof that they see that star quality in him, and he just may make it in the music industry.

Despite the tough year it has been – lockdowns, a pandemic, financial struggles – these ZAlebs have established themselves as the new kids on the block. And as we move on to a new chapter, we hope it brings them more success, and that we get to see them thrive in ZAlebville. Not everyone survives it.
