Not for the first time, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has been praised for having his players’ backs amid criticism. This time, it is captain Siya Kolisi who was fat-shamed by French club Racing 92 boss Jacky Lorenzetti.

The rugby player has been accused of gaining weight and losing focus on his performance.

Siya signed a three-year deal with the club last year after leaving his Durban team, the Sharks.

In a media briefing on Wednesday, 26 June, Rassie Erasmus confirmed that Siya Kolisi would retain captaincy in the upcoming Castle Lager Incoming Series, which kicks off next weekend.

The South African squad will take on one of their biggest rivals  – Ireland – on 6 July and 13 July at Loftus Versfeld and the Hollywoodbets Kings Park, respectively.

Rassie told reporters: “Siya will be captain, Siya will play six flank, Siya is fit and has no injury.”

The Bok captain cheekily added: “Siya is NOT fat and NOT transparent.”

Rassie was referring to comments made by Racing 92 owner Jacky Lorenzetti about Siya Kolisi’s recent performance in the club.

Speaking to the French publication Midi Olympique, the French club boss had harsh words to say about the Springbok captain. This includes comments the 33-year-old had gained weight, and was out of shape.

He said: “[Siya] had a remarkable start to the season, where he was a unifying presence off the field.

Siya Kolisi has been criticised for his weight gain in recent months

“The break [due to an injury] was harmful to him. He put on weight, lost form, and yesterday he was anonymous”.

Rassie’s jab at the French boss was not missed by tweeps, who praised the coach for supporting Siya through a difficult period.

@EmmBee327: “One thing about Rassie is he will always stand on business for his players.”

@rednaer: “If you back a player like this, they will give you everything on the field.”

@EraHoldings: “This is how you get players to run through brick walls for you.  Racing92, money doesn’t buy class.”

Rassie Erasmus has been known to clap back at critics when it comes to Springbok players.

When Manie Libbok was criticised over his kicking abilities during the Rugby World Cup, Rassie insisted that the player was “playing brilliant flyhalf rugby at the moment.”

Rassie also showed his support to Bongi Mbonambi, who was accused of hurling a racial slur at England captain Tom Curry.

In the midst of the criticism, the rugby boss quietly changed the header on his X account to a picture of Mbonambi.

Rassie also previously tweeted his support for player Cobus Reinach and his family. This, after the Springbok received death threats from French players.
