The Limpopo province’s most celebrated artist, Shebeshxt, was gently escorted to the marquee where the mournful gathering had assembled to pay their final respects. Wrapped in a cozy blanket and adorned with a warm woolen hat, the talented musician surveyed the sea of sympathetic faces, acknowledging the presence of his supporters and family members who had come to offer their condolences.

As Shebeshxt’s gaze fell upon the coffin containing the remains of his beloved daughter, Onthatile, the grief-stricken father could no longer contain his anguish. He broke down in uncontrollable sobs, a profound expression of the immeasurable loss he had endured. The heartbreak was palpable, and the attendees joined him in a shared moment of collective agony, united in their compassion for the family’s untimely tragedy.

Onthatile, the apple of Shebeshxt’s eye, had perished in a horrific accident on the R37 near Smelters Mine, south of Polokwane, on June 9th. The collision with a heavy motor vehicle had left her body so disfigured that some family members were advised against viewing the remains during the visitation. Shebeshxt himself had arrived at the funeral service just as the program was nearing its end, unable to attend the wake due to the severity of his own injuries sustained in the accident.

According to Sunday World, Shebeshxt was unfortunately absent at his daughter’s ultimate burial. Onthathile Chuene had her formal interment at a graveyard in Limpopo. Shebeshxt only arrived at the funeral at his residence in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank connected.

The funeral proceedings were marked by tight security, with various companies providing armed personnel in armored protection, as if a potential threat loomed over the solemn event. The media presence was also tightly controlled, with a macho security guard sternly warning a journalist from the Sunday World against taking photographs, threatening to confiscate the device if the warning was disregarded.

Shebeshxt, known affectionately as the “President of ya ma 2000” among his devoted legion of fans, had been en route to perform at the ANC Siyanqoba Rally in Lebowakgomo when the tragic accident occurred. The family spokesperson, James Magoro, revealed that the rapper had initially been admitted to Polokwane Provincial Hospital but was later transferred to the private Netcare Pholoso Hospital, with the assistance of EFF leader Julius Malema, who is reported to be covering the medical bills.

Despite the somber atmosphere, Onthatile’s funeral attracted a large crowd, particularly from among the youth, some of whom had dressed in a similar fashion to their musical idol. A small group gathered just a few meters away from the tent, listening to Shebeshxt’s lyrics on a car stereo, their reverence for the artist evident in their admiring words and the bottles of green and brown they consumed.

The principal of Northern Academy School in Polokwane, Margaret Lekganyane, fondly remembered the day when Shebeshxt had arrived to enroll Onthatile, a blissful pupil. The chaos that ensued, with students peering through the windows and screaming, had perplexed the principal, who was not a fan of the rapper’s music. However, she had witnessed the deep love and dedication Shebeshxt had for his daughter, ensuring she received the best education possible.

The funeral service was attended by politicians and a myriad of artists from Limpopo and beyond, reflecting the profound impact Shebeshxt had on the cultural landscape of the region. Mpho Mashabela, the chairman of the Limpopo Artist Movement, took the opportunity to voice his criticism of the media and the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, perhaps alluding to the challenges faced by the artistic community in the province.
