The Afro-pop group, Mafikizolo splits.

The well-known Afro-pop group Mafikizolo member Nhlanhla Mafu has made the decision to step away from the group in order to concentrate on her solo music career. Nhlanhla has reportedly been booking solo performances and even dropped a new tune called “Ngithanda Wena” with Amatycooler and Dj Tira. Since Nhlanhla appears to be focussing more on her personal pursuits, this decision has raised speculation of a potential breakup among the group.

Mafikizolo has been performing and producing music for more than 28 years, even after the death of its third member, Tebogo Madingoane, in 2004. Nhlanhla’s choice to pursue a solo career, however, seems to have been influenced by a falling out with her group member Theo Kgosinkwe early this year. The two reportedly disagreed, according to a close relations, which appears to have motivated Nhlanhla to concentrate on her own interests.

In addition to her music career, Nhlanhla has been developing her fashion label NN Vintage, which includes a collection of traditional bridal gowns. She has revived this collection, establishing her personal brand and career outside Mafikizolo. In an interview, Nhlanhla said that she and Theo have always had different managers and see themselves as distinct brands within the couple. While the group will continue to work, Nhlanhla is presently promoting her single “Ngithanda Wena” and the Shweshwe bridal line.
