The colloquial Afrikaans phrase “vat en sit” literally translates as “take and sit down,” and it refers to taking a partner and settling down with them without the formalities that accompany a traditional marriage ceremony.

On her program, Dloz’Lami, local medium Thembi Nyathi assists bereaved viewers in finding healing via spiritual readings, whether they are seeking closure or clarity after the death of a loved one. She thinks that in order to come to terms with their loss, her clients need answers that can only be provided by the spiritual world, which she believes can only be provided by the spiritual world.

When Thembi, the presenter of Dlozlam, appeared on the show yesterday, she took it upon herself to ensure that people were aware of the issue of partners. Essentially, Thembi stressed how important it was to understand the spiritual ramifications of living with a spouse who is not legally married. This occurred to her as she was doing her readings. According to Thembi’s spiritual readings, living under the “vat en sit” with the person with whom you are in a relationship is a curse, and she explained why. This was certainly something new for most people, and despite the fact that it was true, many were still amazed by her level of knowledge. More responses may be found in the section below.
