Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal, confirmed that the accident occurred when a heavy motor vehicle from Zimbabwe crashed into multiple trucks and cars near the toll plaza. Tragically, the truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics and rescue teams were met with devastation upon arrival. According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, numerous individuals were trapped in the wreckage, prompting the dispatch of additional emergency personnel and equipment.

“Approximately six trucks and five vehicles were involved in the crash, leaving multiple people entrapped and injured,” Jamieson said. Advanced life support teams and the eThekwini fire department worked tirelessly to free trapped victims.

## Injuries and Hospitalization

More than 15 people sustained varying degrees of injuries, with over 10 individuals reported to be in critical condition. Emergency responders provided stabilization on-site before transporting the injured to Durban hospitals for further medical care.

Despite extensive rescue efforts, the Zimbabwean truck driver succumbed to his injuries while still trapped in the wreckage. The accident left the national N3 highway closed for several hours as authorities worked to clear the scene and ensure the safety of other motorists.

## Call for Caution

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the Marianhill Toll Plaza area and consider alternative routes. The disruption is expected to continue as investigations into the cause of the crash proceed.

“We request motorists to delay trips leading to the toll plaza and exercise patience as emergency teams and investigators work on the scene,” Sibiya advised.

Jamieson emphasized that the cause of the accident would be determined in due course. “At this moment, the circumstances surrounding the collision are unknown, but all necessary authorities are conducting investigations,” he stated.
