After the attempted murder charge, the SA asserts that “Senzo Meyiwa will never get justice.”

One of the defence lawyers in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is allegedly facing charges of attempted murder.

South Africans on social media are losing hope that the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial will ever be solved. This comes after reports that one of the defence lawyers in the case, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, is facing a number of charges.

SENZO MEYIWA MURDER TRIAL: MNGOMEZULU FACING ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES

According to the SABC, Mngomezulu faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, contravention of a protection order, and resisting arrest. He represents accused number one and two (Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi) in the high-profile trial.

The public broadcaster revealed that Mngomezulu’s charges date back to November 2022 and the complainant is his wife, Dumisile Sebentile Mngomezulu.

The couple reportedly work together on the Meyiwa case and although the wife tried to withdraw the charges, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) refused to withdraw.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed that there was an ongoing case against Mngomezulu.

“There’s a judgment that was delivered in December 2023; in that order, the high court ordered the NPA to consult with Mngomezulu and then after draft a memorandum indicating whether prosecution will continue or stop the proceedings.”

The matter is before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.

CONFLICTING VIEWS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Users on X (formerly Twitter) have weighed in on the matter with conflicting views as some have questioned the NPA’s timing.

“Why wait until the case reaches this stage ? It doesn’t make sense at all, something is fishy here,” @officialveli asked.

“That man will never get justice and his family will never get closure,” said @zeeright.

Others have also drawn a comparison to former defense lawyer Advocate Malesela Teffo, who was arrested in full view of cameras during the Meyiwa trial in 2022.

Teffo was struck off the roll last year after allegations of assault; misleading the court on several occasions; contempt of court; breaching court orders; consulting clients without a brief from an attorney; and misappropriating funds received from clients.

“It’s Dejavu the same thing happened to Adv Malesela Teffo what’s what’s worse for him is he was arrested in court, the timing of NPA is always suspicious,” said @zulubongaSA.

However, other users on X emphasised that gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious matter and the law should take its course.

“You complain of govt doing nothing about GBV – open cases then withdraw charges. The NPA long said it won’t accept victims of GBV opening then withdrawing such charges. That’s how Lorch got convicted. Allow the law to take its course,” @somkeleomuhle said.
