BREAKING: Former South African Deputy President David Mabuza Dies at 64

SOUTH AFRICA is mourning the death of former deputy president David Mabuza, who passed away on Thursday afternoon, 3 July, at a hospital in Joburg.

The news of his death was confirmed by African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, who paid tribute to Mabuza as a lifelong servant of the people.

“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we learn of the passing of former Deputy President of the Republic and stalwart of our movement, Comrade David Dabede Mabuza,” Mbalula wrote on social media platform X.

Sources close to Daily Sun confirmed that Mabuza (64) died after being ill for some time. The exact cause of death has not yet been made public.

Mabuza served as deputy president of South Africa from 2018 to 2021, after a long political career that saw him lead the Mpumalanga province as premier and hold top jobs within the ANC.

Known for his behind-the-scenes influence, Mabuza gained a reputation as a political strategist and kingmaker, especially during the ANC’s 2017 national conference.

Mbalula described him as a “patriot, a freedom fighter, and a leader who served with humility and conviction”.

However, his death also ends years of rumours and conspiracy theories about his health.

Mabuza was often the subject of death hoaxes, some of which spread online during his time as deputy president. At times, he would vanish from public view for long periods, causing worry and even false reports that he had died, only for him to return, seemingly fine.

His former spokespersons regularly had to issue statements denying claims of his death, particularly in 2021 when social media falsely claimed he had died in a Russian hospital.

Mabuza later confirmed he had travelled abroad for medical treatment but was alive and recovering.

Despite public scrutiny, Mabuza remained mysterious and quiet, rarely getting into public arguments and often choosing silence over drama.

He stepped down in 2021, making way for Paul Mashatile, and kept a low profile until his death.

The ANC has extended condolences to Mabuza’s family, friends, and comrades, promising to honour his legacy.

“From his days in the struggle against apartheid to his leadership in government, he was a committed cadre who carried the values of unity, discipline, and transformation,” Mbalula added.
