Chiume hails from the vibrant city of Welkom in South Africa. Her father, Wright Tadeyo Chiume, hailed from Usisya, Nkhata Bay, Malawi, while her mother, MaNdlovu, was from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Meet her cousin, Ephraim Mganda Chiume – a charismatic and astute Malawian politician.
Chiume had the pleasure of spending her early childhood in Welkom. She aced her matric in the Eastern Cape and went on to rock her graduation with a degree in teaching in 1976. After a few years of teaching, she decided to embark on a new adventure and relocated to Greece.
Chiume kicked off her acting journey with standout performances in Porgy and Bess, Ipi Ntombi, and Little Shop of Horrors.After her return to South Africa, she effortlessly landed the role of Thembi in the 1989 series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa, followed by a captivating performance in the 1990 film Warriors from Hell. In 2000, she managed to snag the prestigious award for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the South African Film and Television Awards. Quite the accomplishment!
In 2006, she dazzled audiences with her performances in the stage productions of You Strike The Woman and You Strike The Rock. Between 2007 and 2015, Chiume rose to fame for her portrayal of Stella Moloi in the SABC1 drama series Zone 14, which also earned her another SAFTA.[2] In addition to her impressive acting skills, she managed to snag the Award for the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama at the 3rd SAFTA. Quite the accomplishment! In 2015, she graced the small screen with her presence in the soap opera Rhythm City, portraying the character of Mamokete Khuse.
In 2018, Chiume showcased her talent by portraying the Mining Tribe Elder in the highly acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther.
In 2020, Chiume effortlessly took on the role of Mam’Sonto Molefe in the captivating drama series Gomora, leaving audiences in awe. Not only that, but she also graced the screen in the mesmerising film Black Is King, showcasing her undeniable talent.She was nominated for a Feather Award in October 2020.
