Thabo Bester has refuted his 2012 murder and rape convictions, insisting he was “forced to plead guilty” by a “dangerous” police unit.

The bizarre allegations were made in an address to presiding judge Cagney Musi in the Free State High Court on Wednesday, 5 June.

Bester, his rumoured girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana, and seven others are facing charges of assisting Bester’s prison escape, fraud, corruption, and violating multiple bodies.

They will make their next appearance again on 24 July.

THABO BESTER SAYS ‘NO EVIDENCE’ OF CRIMES

Addressing the court, Thabo Bester—who appeared without legal representatives—went on a long-winded rant about the challenges he is facing while incarcerated at Kgosi Mampuru’s C-Max prison.

Bester is currently serving three life sentences for two counts of rape and one count of murder. He also served time for fraud and armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.

His grievances include:

Being isolated from other humans in a “dark hole.”
Having his telephonic legal counsel recorded
Not having access to his legal documentation pertaining to his past convictions.
Being “unfairly targeted” by the police commissioner and the correctional centre
Fearing for his mental health and safety
Being punished over his “political issues in his personal capacity.”
Not having access to a “free and fair trial.”
Treated in an “inhumane” way by being cuffed and shackled, having his “human rights violated.”
Portrayed as guilty by the media
Not permitted to wear his designer clothes
Bizarrely, Bester claimed that there was “no evidence” to suggest that he had committed any crimes.

Thabo Bester has likely cast his vote for the first time during Wednesdays elections

Of his 20222 prison escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre – allegedly with the help of Nandipha Magudumana and others – he said: “I cannot divulge certain information to an alleged escape. I do not believe it was an escape”.

Bester also claimed that the media had “tarnished and destroyed” his reputation “with no facts or evidence.”

He said: “It’s already been confirmed that I’ve escaped, but no one knows the facts. It’s already confirmed that Thabo Bester is a rapist and murderer, but there is no evidence”.

Of his 2011 conviction of two rapes and a separate 2012 conviction for the murder of his girlfriend, Nomfundo Tyhulu, he said: “I am self-convicted. I pleaded guilty to the most dangerous [police] unit – the Cato Manor ‘killer squad’ forced me to plead guilty. And that case has been pending for 13 years in this court. Transcripts have been missing.

“I have been out for a year; there’s not one charge.

“I am not the worst inmate in this country. I have three counts, but I am the most popular inmate for no reason because of political issues I have in my personal capacity that have nothing to do with these legal proceedings.”

COURT CONFESSION OF A RAPIST, MURDERER?

According to GroundUp, Thabo Bester received three life sentences; for the rape of two women, the murder of his girlfriend, Nomfundo Tyhulu, at a Cape Town guest house. He also served time for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.

In a chilling confession before his sentencing, Thabo Bester admitted to all his crimes. The clip was filmed by forensic psychologist Dr Gerard Labuschagne in 2011.

In the footage, a then 23-year-old Bester – known as the “Facebook Rapist,” acknowledged that he had raped two women and killed another, albeit “unintentionally.”

He said of the death of Tyhulu: “If I wanted to kill her, I would’ve killed her in Durban or the first night we got to Cape Town. I could have got her to Mtatha, where there are much less people, and killed her there.

“My intentions were never to kill anyone. With her, I liked her, but things got twisted…and we had a fight.”

He later told the Western Cape High Court: “I am fully responsible for what I have done. I did not fully understand what I was doing in Cape Town. I have known Nomfundo for four years, and I have known her family. I can’t believe that I am responsible for killing her. She believed in me. She supported me when I was accused of rapes in Durban. She came down to support me. She was a friend. I am sorry for what happened”.

He added of the rapes of two models, whom he had lured on Facebook: “The rapes happened in a way where I didnt know [I was committing rape] until I left the premises. If I knew I was doing rape, I could’ve covered myself up by using certain methods.

“It only became known to me when I left.”
