While Markus Jooste’s alleged suicide came as a shock to South Africans, his dramatic demise as a result of white-collar crimes is nothing new. In fact, many social media users have seen this storyline play out before in the form of fellow controversial businessmen Brett Kebble and Gavin Watson.

All three men were high-profile CEOs whose businesses were linked to multi-million rand fraud schemes. At the time of their deaths, they were also “wanted men.”

On Thursday, 21 March – Human Rights Day – Markus Jooste allegedly died by a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

The 63-year-old’s suicide comes a day after he had been hit by a R475 million fine for accounting fraud at the multinational holding company Steinhoff International. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Jooste had been made aware of a warrant for his arrest.

Jooste had reportedly killed himself below the famous Hermanus Cliff Path Walk near his holiday home.

In a video posted by BizNews’s Alec Hogg on YouTube, the suicide scene was accessible to the public.

Hogg said in a clip filmed on the rocky beach of Kwaaiwater: “The blood is still evident. As you can see, there is still evidence of what happened and where it happened”.

Blood was also visible along the pathway where medical personnel had carried Jooste.

According to a local car guard, the businessman had used a silencer to reduce the sound of his gunshot. He died shortly after arriving at the Hermanus Mediclinic, reported the Citizen.

Western Cape police confirmed that a death inquest case docket has been opened at the Hermanus police station.

Since news of Markus Jooste’s alleged suicide, social media users have demanded “evidence” of his death. They have also demanded that his funeral service be televised for the sake of transparency.

With a cloud of suspicion over Markus Jooste’s death, many South Africans on social media have revisited the mysterious fatal car crash of fellow controversial businessman, Gavin Watson.

Watson was the former CEO of African Global Operations, previously known as Bosasa, which was implicated in a state capture report just months before his 2019 death.

Despite reports indicating he had died in the crash, social media users have remained adamant that Watson “faked” his death, reportedly en route to the OR Tambo International Airport.

Meanwhile, the late mining magnate and ANC Brett Kebble was also roped into commentary about Markus Jooste.

Kebble – who had strong ties to the late police commissioner Jackie Selebi, who was convicted of corruption – died in 2005 in a “suicide by murder” incident.

According to IOL, Kebble had planned his “assisted suicide”. He did this by reportedly hiring hitmen to orchestrate the fatal shooting, which was mistaken for a botched hijacking.

Like Jooste, Kebble was facing charges by the NPA for fraud, share price manipulation, fraud, and tax evasion.
