Melusi Yeni, Thembinkosi won their first acting awards at the KZN Film & TV Awards

For over a decade, the Simon Sabela Awards have stood as a beacon of recognition for the KwaZulu-Natal film industry. Established to honor the exceptional talent and creativity within the local cinematic landscape, these awards have not only highlighted the accomplishments of seasoned professionals but have also encouraged emerging artists to pursue their dreams.

This year’s ceremony was particularly special, as it marked the first win for screen veterans Melusi Yeni and Thembinkosi Mthembu—both of whom have made significant contributions to the South African television and film scene. Yeni, who won for his compelling portrayal of Sokhobase in the popular telenovela Sibongile and the Dlaminis, delivered a moving acceptance speech. He reminisced about 25 years ago when he boarded a Greyhound bus to Johannesburg, a journey that marked the beginning of his career in the arts. “This award is for all the actors who are still chasing their dreams,” he said, emphasizing the importance of recognition in the arts.

In an interview with TimesLIVE, Yeni expressed how accolades like the Simon Sabela statuette serve as powerful motivators for actors. “It always feels good for someone to shake your hand and say, ‘well done.’ We see you, we appreciate you, and that’s exactly what this is,” he remarked, underscoring the emotional significance of receiving such an honor.

On the other hand, Thembinkosi Mthembu, who won Best Actor in a TV Series for his role in Shaka ILembe, was overwhelmed with joy and disbelief at his victory. Having made a notable entrance into the industry with his breakout performance in The Republic in 2019, Mthembu has already garnered various accolades, including Hunk of the Year at The Feather Awards and People’s Choice at the 2023 GQ Men of the Year awards.

However, the Simon Sabela award marks his first recognition strictly for acting talent. Reflecting on his win, he commented on the nerves he shared with fellow nominee Wiseman Ncube, acknowledging the competitive nature of the awards while advocating for a spirit of collaboration among peers. “You’re nothing without your co-actors,” he stated, highlighting the interconnectedness of everyone in the filmmaking process—from actors to directors and crew members.

The night also celebrated a host of other outstanding talents. Deli Malinga clinched the Best Actress in TV for her performance in Umkokha, while Jo-Anne Reyneke took home the Best Actress in Film award. The esteemed Cynthia Shange from Deliwe was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, a fitting recognition for her extensive contributions to the industry.

The Simon Sabela Awards continue to be an essential platform for uplifting and celebrating the diverse talents within KwaZulu-Natal’s film industry. By honoring actors, filmmakers, and crew members, these awards not only acknowledge individual achievements but also strengthen the community, inspiring others to forge their paths in the world of cinema. As Melusi Yeni and Thembinkosi Mthembu’s stories illustrate, these accolades serve as a reminder that hard work and passion can lead to meaningful recognition and fulfillment in the arts.
