Miss SA runner-up admits frustration at her and other medical doctors being jobless

The high unemployment rate among the youth in South Africa appears to be a nationwide plague that is never-ending. So much so, that it has now even filtered through to the medical field with a high number of doctors being unemployed.

With the national government seemingly appearing to be incapable of finding proper solutions to solving this issue, graduates and others in the medical field have expressed their frustration.

The latest of these is Miss South Africa 2021 runner-up Moratwe Masima. As a medical doctor by profession, she expressed that she has a desire to serve those in need but is unable to.

Taking to her LinkedIn post, the 24-year-old revealed that she now joins more than 800 hundred graduates who went through the entire processes of tertiary education, did their internships and completed community service, yet still find themselves unemployed.

“Like many, I have invested in courses worth thousands of rands in the hope of securing permanent employment in our public hospitals to serve 84% of our population,” further emphasising that only 16 percent of the country has access to private doctors or general practitioners.

She further added that like many other graduates, she has been considering either opening a private practice – would cost a large amount of capital – or work abroad since the government does not have the budget.

“It’s sad because we dedicated our lives to our careers. It’s sad because we are being pushed away even though we want to serve.”
