RIP LUKE FLEURS

On Wednesday evening, Luke Fleurs was shot during a hijacking at a Honeydew petrol station.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the Kaizer Chiefs footballer was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI when he was ambushed.

Masondo told IOL: “While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series.

“The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle. Then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice.”

Luke was rushed to the nearest hospital but was certified dead on arrival.

MORE CELEB DEATHS FROM HIJACKINGS

Luke Fleurs was not the only celebrity death related to a hijacking. Here are other high-profile cases…

Lucky Dube

In 2007, South Africans were left heartbroken after award-winning reggae artist Lucky Dube was killed in a hail of bullets in front of his two children during a botched hijacking.

At the time, the 43-year-old muso had stopped at his brother’s Rosettenville home in Johannesburg. After being shot at close range, Dube attempted to flee in his Chrysler but crashed into a tree, reported IOL.

Two years later, three men behind the shooting were sentenced to life in prison on charges of murder, attempted robbery, and other crimes.

Gito Baloi

Exactly 20 years ago – 4 April 2004 – jazz muso and bassist Gito Baloi was shot and killed by hijackers while on his way home from a gig in Pretoria.

According to Mail & Guardian, his killers have never been found.

Dumisani Masilela

In 2021, five men were convicted of the murder of Rhythm City actor Dumi Masilela. They were sentenced to life, reports TimesLive.

Dumi was shot in the stomach in a botched hijacking that took place in Tembisa on 3 August 2017. After the incident, Dumi – who was married to fellow actress Simz Ngema – drove himself to hospital but later succumbed to his fatal injuries.

Simz told The Sowetan after her husband’s passing: “I knew that it was meant to happen the way that it happened. But I felt like there was no reason good enough for it.

“I would ask God those questions: what’s the reason behind it? They always say everything happens for a reason, but I felt like, what is that reason? I didn’t understand, but I never lost my belief in God. I think at that time, God was the only thing that made sense in my life. It kept me sane”.

Jeffrey Zikhali

In December 2023, TV personality Jeffrey Zikhali was found on the side of a busy road following a botched hijacking.

The SABC confirmed that Zikhala was gunned down while en route to his home in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.

There has been no news of the arrests of the suspects linked to the crime.
