Soccer Legend Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Laid to Rest
Family, friends, and admirers gathered on Thursday, November 28, to bid a final farewell to soccer icon Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe at the stadium named in his honor, the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Tshwane. The beloved football legend passed away on November 19 at the age of 74.
Moripe, a former player for Orlando Pirates and Pretoria Bantu Callies, was laid to rest at Lotus Cemetery, west of Tshwane, following an emotional memorial service that celebrated his remarkable contributions to South African soccer.
## A Legacy Celebrated
Oupa Moripe, the family spokesperson, spoke warmly of the legend’s impact on and off the field. “He always strategized his moves, using his head to decide what he would do with his feet. He was the best dribbler,” Oupa said. During the ceremony, the family expressed their love and respect through song and dance around the coffin.
Oupa also highlighted how much joy Mamelodi Sundowns brought to Masterpieces. “Whenever Sundowns won, his happiness was undeniable. We are grateful for all the support we have received,” he added.
## A Special Provincial Send-off
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi joined the mourners earlier in the week, offering comfort to the grieving family. The funeral was recognized as a Special Provincial Official Funeral, Category Two, a significant honor that reflected the respect and admiration Moripe commanded.
Oupa expressed his gratitude for the dignified farewell: “This wonderful send-off honors my brother and his legacy. Wherever he is, I know he is at peace.”
## Carrying Forward the Legacy
Rachel Moripe, the soccer star’s niece, called on the community to preserve and promote Masterpieces’ legacy. “His life and contributions must not be forgotten. As the people of Atteridgeville, Pretoria, and Gauteng, we should uplift one another and ensure his name lives on,” she said.
Itu Moloto, a representative of the Moripe Foundation, emphasized the legend’s central role in South African soccer history. “You cannot talk about football in Atteridgeville or Pretoria Bantu Callies without mentioning Masterpieces. He is a cornerstone of our soccer heritage. Rest in peace, Modimo wa Bolo,” he said.

Godfrey Masala, a neighbor, shared fond memories of the ever-smiling icon. “He was full of jokes, humble, and straightforward. Losing him is deeply painful for us all,” he said.
Clifford Simango, chairman of the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Goodwill Games, reflected on the efforts to honor the legend by naming the stadium after him. “We played a significant role in ensuring this tribute was realized,” Simango noted.
Councillor Esther Masuku described the day as a somber occasion, emphasizing Moripe’s passion for his God-given talent. “We are saying goodbye to a beloved figure whose impact will never fade,” she said.
