Teenager Ends Her Life After Failing Matric
A Dream Cut Short
Onthatile Makgale, a teenager from Klerksdorp in the North West province, tragically ended her life after failing her matric exams. Onthatile had high aspirations of studying civil engineering, a career path she was deeply passionate about. She worked tirelessly to excel in Mathematics and Physical Science, the critical subjects required for university admission into her chosen field. Unfortunately, she struggled with these subjects, leading to her failure and ultimately her devastating decision.
## A Tragic Outcome
Last week Friday, Onthatile made the heartbreaking choice to end her life by hanging herself. Her family is still reeling from the shock and pain of losing her. She attended Vaal Reefs Technical High School, where she completed her matric year. According to her older sister, Kgomotso Makgale, the family is devastated by her death. They firmly believed she could have overcome this setback by returning to school and reattempting her exams.
“She had so much potential and could have passed if she tried again,” said Kgomotso.
## The Day Before the Tragedy
Onthatile spent the night before her death at a friend’s house, eagerly awaiting the release of the matric results. Like many other students, she chose to learn her fate through the newspaper. Kgomotso speculates that seeing her friend’s success and her own failure may have deepened Onthatile’s despair.
The family discovered her lifeless body hanging from a tree behind their house.
## Silent Struggles
One of the most painful aspects for the family is that Onthatile did not express her feelings to anyone or leave a note explaining her emotions. Her sister shared the guilt she now carries, wishing she had been with Onthatile that day.
“I regret going to work on Friday instead of being by her side when she collected her statement,” said Kgomotso. “I wish I had told her that failing matric is not the end of the road. She could have fixed those marks and achieved her dreams. My mother is heartbroken, as she had a special bond with Onthatile.”
## Police Investigation
North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed the incident. “An inquest docket has been opened after a young girl allegedly hanged herself in Orkney on Friday, January 19. The motive remains unclear, and no foul play is suspected,” he stated.
## A Call for Support
This tragic incident highlights the immense pressure matric students often face. The Makgale family hopes that others in similar situations can find the courage to reach out for support before making irreversible decisions.
