TV legend Boikie gets his flowers
THE North West is set to celebrate one of its greatest stars as the 2nd Annual Khuma Film Festival kicks off from 28 to 30 May at the Phillemon Masinga Sports Complex Hall in Khuma.
Veteran actor Moditle “Boikie” Pholo (76) will be honoured for his outstanding contribution to South African film and TV.
The Orkney-born legend has spent over five decades captivating audiences with powerful performances in iconic shows like Lesilo Rula, Skeem Saam, Ga Re Dumele, Memello, and Generations.
Festival director Neo Ntlatleng, also an actor and filmmaker, said Boikie’s recognition is long overdue.
“We are proud and honoured to celebrate our very own legend, Ntate “Boikie” Pholo. It is about time our legends are given their flowers while they can still smell them. His work has inspired generations of actors from across the country’s nine provinces,” said Neo.
The Khuma Film Festival aims to grow the local film industry by bringing together audiences, aspiring filmmakers, and industry professionals.
The three-day event will feature screenings, workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions led by well-known names like Vincent Moloi, Robert Mpisi, Israel Matseke-Zulu, and Didintle Khunou.
Opening night will feature Sew the Winter into My Skin, a historical drama by award-winning director Jahmil XT Qubeka about the 1950s Karoo outlaw John Kepe.
The festival will close with The Life and Times of Menzi Ngubane, a documentary about the late actor’s life from 1987 to his passing in 2021.
Festival founder Naomi Mokhele said the event also aims to encourage youth participation.
“We want young people to tell their stories in unique ways. Our goal is to build a film-loving community and create opportunities,” said Naomi.
Supported by the National Film and Video Foundation, the festival continues to grow as a vital platform for celebrating Mzansi’s creative talents.
