It’s been a long and thrilling Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) for Nigeria and South Africa. The two countries are among the largest economies in Africa, and they are also among the most vocal on social media. Nigerians and South Africans often clashed on Twitter (X) in what they call “Twitter wars”.

This rivalry was ignited when the two countries clashed in the Afcon semi-finals, with Nigeria running away with the bragging rights. They defeated South Africa and immediately claimed they were the custodians of amapiano. Many of their fans had been vocal on social media, claiming to be the best country in Africa, both in soccer and music.

Regarding Nigerian fans’ social media noise, Cassper said they never gave them space to breathe.

“@__blessedsinner, hahaha, you guys never left us to breathe. You were even making songs about us rejoicing !!! Feel Am!!” he said.

CASSPER NYOVEST ON WHY NIGERIA MUST RETURN AMAPIANO

Since Bafana Bafana had lost, South Africans kept quiet but were waiting for their time. Now that Nigeria did not win the Cup, they are after them, calling them out and taking back what belongs to them.

“Nigeria, does that mean we can have our amapiano back? Cause I mean, technically, you didn’t win the tournament, so return to creators, please ?” Cassper said He also spoke of how much Ivory Coast had restored the peace on social media.

“Côte d’Ivoire have restored world peace!!! They deserve the gold medal for winning CAF and an extra medal of Honour!!!” he said.

THE RISE OF AMAPIANO

We looked at its rise as Cassper Nyovest demanded amapiano back from Nigeria after their Afcon loss. The popular genre originated in South Africa, with producers like DJ Maphorisa and Kabza de Small among its pioneers. Since then, amapiano has risen from the townships, breaking borders until it reached Nigeria

After that, many Nigerian artists like Davido joined the genre and have been making top hits. Nigeria has produced equally good amapiano in recent years, and most Nigerians believe they have taken it to a top level. This argument left them claiming amapiano during Afcon, but now Cassper Nyovest wants them to return it to South Africa.
