Watch: Funny video of Bafana players greeting Ivorian staff

Bafana Bafana received a heroes welcome when they arrived at their accommodation ahead of their semifinal match against Nigeria.

South Africans on social media were in stitches following a video of the Bafana Bafana squad arriving at their accommodation after beating Cape Verde in the AFCON 2023 quarter final on Saturday.

BAFANA STAR GRANT KEKANA SPEAKING FRENCH

The clip shows the players arriving to a guard of honour and standing ovation from the staff at the village in Bouake at Citè Can, Ivory Coast.

First to disembark is Bafana hero and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who greets the workers. He is followed by his fellow Mamelodi Sundowns teammates, including Teboho Mokoena and Ricardo Goss.

While some players just walk off with no acknowledge of the staff, some (including Mothobi Mvala) smile and wave.

But it is Masandawana defender Grant Kekana who puts a smile on everyone’s face with his energetic greeting. The bubbly footballer shows off his French speaking skills as he smiles, waves and shouts “bonjour” a couple of times. Despite getting the pronounciation wrong, the staff are pleased with the soccer star.

Bafana fans on X (formerly Twitter) are also impressed with Kekana.

SEMIFINAL AGAINST NIGERIA

Bafana Bafana are through to the AFCON semifinals after beating Cape Verde in a penalty shoot-out.

Williams, who is also the Bafana team captain, saved four penalties to help South Africa reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following a 0-0 draw against the Blue Sharks.

Undoubtedly a contender for the Best Goalkeeper award at the end of the tournament, the Sundowns goalkeeper made a spectacular late save after Gilson Benchimol’s strike which ensured the quarter-final entered extra time.

And there was more from Williams who blocked Cape Verde’s first three penalties by diving to his right. He saved the last spot kick by diving to his left.

Bafana meet rivals Nigeria in their semifinal at Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on Wednesday at 19:00 SA time.
