It’s surprising to many that some celebrated SA actresses dropped out of college to furnish their craze of small screens. However, some dropped out due to financial woes, while others seized the opportunities to be breadwinners at the expense of their education.

Over the years, the South African entertainment industry has quickly become one of the best in the world, and several actors have starred in big-budget movies by international productions.

SA ACTRESSES WHO ARE UNIVERSITY DROPOUTS

Well, let’s dive into some South African actresses who have been winning big despite being dropouts.

AMA QAMATA

The 25-year-old actress has wowed many with her unmatched flair over the years. She started acting in school productions before she switched the floor to advertisements.

At 17, she had her small screen debut as Naledi in the SABC 1 situation comedy My Perfect Family. In 2020, she joined Gomora as Buhle. A year later, she joined Netflix’s Blood & Water as Puleng.

However, it is a shocker to many that she is a dropout. She enrolled at the University of Cape Town but withdrew for a Theatre and Performance Degree in her second year.

BONANG MATHEBA

No doubt, Bonang has been said to be one of the South African actresses who have won it big despite being a dropout. However, is Bonang Matheba a dropout, as alleged?

Matheba dropped out of the University of Johannesburg after landing her first job. Nevertheless, rumours have it that she went on to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing.

She is a jill of all trades and has an illustrious career to show for it. Bonang has starred in several screen productions and has hosted several events. She has also made a name for herself on-air as a radio host.

NELISA MCHUNU

She is best known for her on-screen character, Fikile, on Uzalo. Despite her unmatched acting flair, it’s surprising that she is a dropout. Mchunu studied dramatic arts in high school before enrolling for a BA in Media Studies.

However, financial woes forced the actress to drop out of the University of Witwatersrand.

MINNIE DLAMINI

Minnie Dlamini reportedly dropped out of the University of Cape Town to pursue her TV career. In one of her interviews, she once mentioned returning to school to pursue a degree in Marketing.

BOITY THULO

She has quickly become one of the most sought-after media personalities in South Africa. Boity Thulo is a South African actress who won it big despite being a dropout.

Due to financial woes, she had to drop out of Monash University, where she had enrolled for Psychology and Criminology. Boity Thulo has hosted several shows, including Big Brother Africa, and starred in big-budget drama series, including Rockville.
