Watch: Sundowns to AFCON Semifinals? Fans thank club that “carried Bafana on their backs
Bafana Bafana has secured its spot at the Afcon semi-finals next week after a nail-biting clash against Cape Verde on Saturday. And many believe the proud moment is largely thanks to PSL club Mamelodi Sundowns and player Ronwen Williams.
The South African national team has advanced to the final stages for the first time in more than two decades. The squad is made up of 10 players from the club, owned by billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe.
SUNDOWNS HELP SA TO AFCON SEMI-FINALS
On Saturday, 3 February, Bafana inched their way to the Afcon semi-finals via a 2-1 penalty shoot-out.
Mothibi Mvala and Teboho Mokoena helped shoot the ball into the back of the net, while goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams made four heroic saves against Cape Verde.
On social media, SA soccer fans were over the moon that their team had made it to their first Afcon semi-final game since 2000.
Others pulled no punches in claiming that Bafana’s victory was entirely credited to Sundowns talented players.
Here’s what a few had to say…
@MoshekiD: “Lest we forget to celebrate our very own Rhulani Mokwena for the hard he has put in to forge such formidable team players. Bafana Bafana is nothing without Mamelodi Sundowns.”
@Ke_Tshepi_: “Mamelodi Sundowns players have really carried Bafana Bafana.”
@Kojotengue: “While we praise Hugo Bross, let’s not forget Rhulani Mokwena, the coach of Mamelodi Sundowns. He is the unsung hero.”
@Khosi_4_Lyf: “Thank God to Mamelodi Sundowns and Rulani Mokoena. Bafana Bafana is no longer a laughing stock.”
@Dez3M_: “Mamelodi Sundowns through to the AFCON semis, wow.”
