Actress Asavela Mqokiyana returns to TV and joins Uzalo after giving birth
Actress Asavela Mqokiyana is back in the spotlight after taking a year-long break to focus on motherhood. The 29-year-old star from Mount Frere, Eastern Cape, has officially joined the cast of Uzalo, one of South Africa’s most-watched soapies.

A Comeback After Motherhood
After her last appearance on Durban Gen in 2023, Asavela stepped away from the screen to welcome her child. She shared that returning to the acting scene required both mental and physical preparation.

“After giving birth, I had to work on getting my body and mind back in shape to return stronger than ever,” she said.
A Return to Her Roots
Although born in the Eastern Cape, Asavela grew up in Lamontville, south of Durban — the very city where both Uzalo and Durban Gen are filmed.
“It feels good to be working back home,” she said. “Being in Durban, close to where I grew up, is inspiring. It’s a full-circle moment for me.”
Grateful for the Opportunity
Joining a show like Uzalo is a major milestone for Asavela, who has also starred in Isibaya and Abomama.
“I’m excited to work with actors I’ve looked up to for years. Every time I step on set, I’m reminded how far I’ve come. I’m thankful to Stained Glass for giving me this opportunity,” she said.
A Complex New Role
In Uzalo, Asavela plays Sizakele, a seemingly humble nurse — but there’s more to her than meets the eye.
“People can expect a lot to unfold. Sizakele may appear quiet now, but her story will surprise you,” Asavela teased.
She encourages viewers to stay tuned, promising twists and growth in her character’s journey.
