Breaking News: RIP to Presley Chweneyagae
SOUTH Africa has lost one of its brightest stars!
Multi-award-winning actor Presley “Cobrizi” Chweneyagae has tragically passed away.
The Mahikeng-born icon reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday, 27 May, at just 40 years old. At this moment, the cause of death has not yet been revealed.
His untimely death was confirmed by MLA, his acting agency.
Presley’s love for acting started at a young age. At just 10 years old, he joined drama classes at the North West Arts Council (now known as The Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation). From there, he blossomed into one of South Africa’s most celebrated talents, destined to make waves on both local and international stages.
Cobrizi became a household name with his extraordinary performance in Tsotsi. He made history this year when his role, Cobrizi from the canned telenovela, The River scored a new 13-part series on Mzansi Magic with the same name.
The 2005 film didn’t just win fans here at home but put South Africa on the map, earning an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards. It was a moment of pride for the entire nation.
Presley was no one-hit wonder. Over the years, he delivered brilliant performances in films like Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and dazzled audiences in the acclaimed television series The River.
When it came to the stage, Presley’s talent was unmatched. He mesmerised theatre-goers with roles in classics like Hamlet, Julius Caesar, and adaptations such as Dikeledi. His stage credits didn’t stop there, with standout performances in productions like Kalushi, Relativity, Jack in the Box, and The Grandball.
But Presley wasn’t just an actor – he was a storyteller through and through. He co-wrote the internationally acclaimed play Relativity with Paul Grootboom and wowed audiences as the director of the award-winning production CELL NO 4.
Those who knew him will remember Presley not only for his talent but for his heart. He was a guiding light for many young artists, sharing his wisdom and lifting others up in an industry often difficult to navigate.
As South Africa mourns this devastating loss, Presley leaves behind a loving wife, children, and a legacy that will never be forgotten. The nation awaits further details of the memorial service, which will undoubtedly honour his incredible contributions to the arts.
