Popcru chairman in the Thabo Mofutsanyana district, Tshepo Thamaha, urged cops to defend themselves when faced with danger.

“We’ve lost more than five officers in less than a year, including those gunned down on duty in Mangaung Village. The criminals have declared war against us, and our employer has given us the tools of the trade. It’s up to us to use them to protect ourselves and society,” he said.

District Crime Prevention Commander Brigadier Nkai Molefe strongly condemned the killing of police officers and hailed Malema as a hero cop who risked his life to combat gangsterism in the Tseki area.

“We’ve lost a fearless and dedicated police officer who was always ready to protect our community. Constable Malema had a track record of apprehending notorious criminals. The daily loss of our members is unsustainable. The fact that Constable Malema identified himself as a police officer and the suspect responded with gunfire indicates a clear declaration of war against law enforcement. We will pursue justice relentlessly until the suspect is apprehended,” she said.

Family spokeswoman and the late constable’s sister, Makete Moloi, said the family is terrified beyond words.

“This is an unhealable pain for us. We’ve lost our brother in cold blood. We hope the police will swiftly apprehend the suspect.”

Witness describes the incident

Talking to Daily Sun at the funeral service, one of the victims (26) expressed how brutal the incident was.

“The issue began when the suspect attempted to unlawfully overtake us on the left. Our female driver signalled to him that the road was too narrow for passing. However, he proceeded to overtake anyway and then abruptly stopped. He then approached our vehicle, physically pushing our female driver,” said the victim.

The victim said Constable Malema intervened, trying to de-escalate the situation and protect the woman from further harm.

“The suspect became aggressive, and despite Malema’s efforts, he shot him in the head. Malema didn’t die immediately. In a desperate attempt to defend himself, the suspect shot me twice in the leg when I tried to intervene with a bottle of beer. Bleeding, Malema instructed me to flee.

“When the suspect realised Malema was still alive, he shot him again in the head and made a threatening remark that he wanted to show us flames,” he said.

The suspect was allegedly seen leaving the crime scene in a white Ford Fiesta with a GP Number plate.

The female driver is fighting for her life in hospital.
