POPPY Maseko shared that her mum had a desire to leave the house, claiming her late mum was calling her.
This occurred late at night, around 10pm on Monday, 9 June.
She tried by all means to restrain her as she knew she suffered from dementia.
She locked all the doors, gave her medication, and put her to bed.
Poppy said her mum sneaked out while she was asleep around 2am, and she fell into the wrong hands.
Gogo Busi Maseko (76) died after she was brutally assaulted by a mob at Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni.
She was accused of witchcraft.
This was after gogo was found sleeping in someone’s yard in Emabeleni Section, Etwatwa.
The horrifying incident has ignited widespread anger and calls for increased public awareness about dementia.
Gogo Busi’s daughter Poppy recounted the distressing events leading to her mum’s death.
She said on Monday night, gogo, disoriented due to her dementia, believed her late mum was calling her.
“I tried to calm her, gave her medication, and put her to bed.”
At midnight, Poppy checked on her mum and found her still sleeping.
However, by 5.10am, Poppy woke up to find the main door to the house opened and gogo Busi’s bedroom door wide open, and she was gone.
Frantically, Poppy contacted family members, who said gogo was not with them.
After posting a photo of her mum on Facebook, Poppy received a tip-off around 7am that an elderly woman had been caught and assaulted by a mob in Emabeleni, accused of witchcraft.
Upon arrival, Poppy learned that her mum had already been transported by ambulance to Phillip Moyo Clinic in Etwatwa.
“My mother is suffering from dementia, and having this mental illness doesn’t make her a witch.
“I don’t know how those who did this to her feel. Assaulting a defenceless elderly woman, they could hear that what was coming out of her mouth wasn’t making sense because she was confused, but they continued beating her up,” said Poppy.
She challenged the attackers, asking if they found any “muthi” (traditional medicine) in her mum’s possession.
“Those who claim she was a witch, did they find any muthi on her?”
She pleaded with the public to “stop being ignorant and understand dementia”.
“When old people suffer from dementia, they are disoriented and confused. This is not witchcraft,” she said.
Sadly, gogo Busi died upon arrival at Phillip Moyo Clinic.
The clinic notified Etwatwa police, who have opened an inquest docket into her death.
Poppy is determined to see justice served for her mum, declaring: “She didn’t deserve to die in this cruel manner.”
Colonel Patrick Qangase, Etwatwa Police Station commander warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
