Deputy Mayor Caught on Camera Firing Gun During Son’s Umgidi Celebration – No Arrest Yet
The Deputy Mayor of Bitou Municipality, Nokuzola Kolwapi, is facing public scrutiny after video footage emerged showing her firing a gun into the air during her son’s Umgidi ceremony in KwaNokuthula, Plettenberg Bay.

The video, which has circulated widely on social media, shows Kolwapi dancing in the middle of a large crowd on Sajini Street before raising a handgun and firing multiple shots as initiates were welcomed home. Several children can be seen nearby during the incident.
Police have confirmed that a case has been opened at the KwaNokuthula Police Station. Sergeant Chris Spies, a police spokesperson, said officers visited the premises after the video went viral. The matter is being investigated as pointing a firearm, and the investigation is still in its early stages. No arrests have been made so far.
The incident has sparked debate online about safety, public conduct, and the responsibilities of elected officials. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to assist with the ongoing investigation.
