A large crowd of family members, close friends, colleagues, and members of the broader education community gathered to bid farewell to a man whose influence extended far beyond the football pitch. The funeral service, held in Mondeor, Johannesburg, was filled with heartfelt tributes from those whose lives he touched. Speaker after speaker described Dhliwayo as a humble, visionary leader who dedicated his life to using education as a tool for empowerment and social change.

Among those who paid tribute was veteran journalist and former colleague, Phil Molefe. Reflecting on his early days, Molefe recounted how Dhliwayo had recognized potential in him when he was just a young man from Vosloorus with limited opportunities. “DD gave me a chance. He offered me a teaching job in Soweto that changed my life forever,” Molefe said emotionally.

He went on to describe how Dhliwayo would stand at the school gate each morning, greeting every learner by name. “That was his tradition. He didn’t just lead from behind a desk — he was there every day, welcoming students and shaping futures.”

Molefe added that Dhliwayo was more than a boss; he was a father figure. “On my first day, I stood nervously outside the school. I let the students walk past, unsure of what was ahead. Then I saw him at the gate, like a father welcoming me to a new journey.”

Dr. Mary-Antoinette Dhliwayo, his daughter-in-law, shared that his passing had left a significant void in their family. She remembered him as a man whose life revolved around one central theme: education. “The DD I knew only spoke one language — the language of learning. He truly believed education could uplift not just individuals, but entire communities.”

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) also issued a statement mourning his passing. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of former Orlando Pirates chairman Daniel Donald Dhliwayo. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.” The PSL announced that a moment of silence would be observed at all Betway Premiership, Motsepe Foundation Championship, and Nedbank Cup fixtures in his honour.

As tributes continue to pour in, one thing is clear — DD Dhliwayo’s legacy will live on. From football fields to classrooms, he inspired generations and proved that greatness lies not only in trophies, but in transforming lives.

His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of many as a legend, a leader, and a true servant of the people.
