Julia Stuart Mourns the Loss of Phumlani Msibi: “I Have Lost a Dear Friend”
South Africa is mourning the loss of one of its most respected sports voices. Phumlani Msibi, a beloved figure in the sports broadcasting fraternity, passed away on Friday after a battle with illness. He was 57 years old.
For decades, Msibi’s warm voice and sharp sports analysis brought matches to life for audiences across the country.
Known for his professionalism and unmistakable laugh, he built a legacy far beyond the microphone.
Among those who paid tribute was fellow broadcaster Julia Stuart, who shared a deeply emotional message in honour of her colleague and friend.
“South Africa has lost a legendary broadcaster. I have lost a dear friend,” she began.
Reflecting on their time together, Stuart credited Msibi for playing a pivotal role in her own journey in the industry.
“You helped me become the presenter I am today by teaching me, mentoring and guiding me, and championing me. Always in your quiet, encouraging, thoughtful and patient way. When people say you learn from the best – I learned from you.”
Their bond extended far beyond the studio. From sharing photos of each other on screen to stocking up on Woolies snacks for road trips, Stuart recalled the everyday moments that made their friendship special. “Too many memories to share,” she wrote, also referencing their inside jokes about running orders, workshops, and even treadmills.
When Msibi fell ill, he remained hopeful about returning to broadcasting.
“You were confident you would be back next season,” Stuart wrote. “But now we will never hear your voice in commentary or post-match again. Never hear your iconic laugh or see your face in real life again.”
She ended her tribute with a line that echoes the affection and humour that Msibi was known for:
“I will miss you. And as you always said: ‘I love you still.’”
Then, in a final nod to his signature sign-off: “I am Phumlani Msibi. Bye bye.”
