Khanyi Mbau’s Ex-Husband Mandla Mthembu Dies in New York at 68
Mandla Elliot Mthembu, the businessman and former husband of media personality Khanyi Mbau, has passed away in New York at the age of 68.
According to his family spokesperson, Karabo Mohlala, Mthembu died on Sunday evening following complications from a second stroke. He had been living in the United States for several years.
“Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, Mr. Mthembu succumbed to complications related to the stroke,” Mohlala confirmed in a statement to Sunday World.
Mthembu, who would have turned 69 on December 24, was once a prominent figure in South Africa’s social and business circles. His high-profile marriage to Khanyi Mbau was marked by luxury, expensive cars, and designer labels — a lifestyle that fascinated the public. Despite their 29-year age gap, Mbau once described their love story as “an adventure.”
Following their separation, Mthembu faded from the public eye and relocated to the US, where he started a new chapter of his life.
Beyond his flashy lifestyle, Mthembu was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, his role in South Africa’s business landscape, and his long-standing association with the ANC.
“His legacy will be remembered by many across the country,” his family said.
Funeral arrangements and memorial details are expected to be announced in the coming days.
