Khaya Dladla’s Ex-Husband Mercutio Buthelezi’s Harrowing Battle with Cancer Since February
MERCUTIO Buthelezi’s family is putting all hope in God for him.
Mercutio (38), who is the ex-lover of top actor Khaya Dladla, has been in and out of hospital since February, battling with cancer.
His devastated family told Daily Sun what hurts them more is that he has no signs of recovery.
Mercutio was set to have an operation in one of the private hospitals in Durban on Wednesday, 4 June.
His aunt, Nomsa Buthelezi, said they hope the operation will determine which cancer Mercutio suffers from.
“Doctors are not sure if he is suffering from blood cancer or bone marrow cancer. Now, I hope after the operation doctors will know which type of cancer they are dealing with.
“From February, he has been in and out of hospital and with no signs of recovery. He is also struggling to breathe. Now, we are putting all hopes on God and hope His intervention will help. We still need him, and he is still young,” she said.
Nomsa said Mercutio kept his illness a secret from her for a long time because he was protecting her because she is diabetic.
“I found out later and I’m heartbroken. He is sick and we are praying hard for his recovery. He has a lot of things to do. We are also asking for strength from God to comfort him because when we are visiting him and calling him, he is crying, and as the family we have to be strong enough to give him hope. He told us he was scared.
“We are begging God to give him another chance because there are many cancer survivors in the world and even my cousin survived cancer and lived 13 years. We are heartbroken because of his illness, and we have even lost weight,” she said.
Dladla, who plays Lazarus on e.tv’s drama series House of Zwide on e.tv, was engaged to Mercutio Buthelezi at a surprise engagement party attended by family and close friends in October 2020.
Their lavish party was held at Ocean Reef Hotel Zinkwazi, north of Durban, and broke up in 2022.
Mercutio, who was active on social media, last posted in January. He always shared memories of his outings and was open about his relationship with Khaya.
Daily Sun tried to reach out to Khaya, but he was not available to comment. His phone rang unanswered, and blue ticked the WhatsApp message sent to him.
