Mzansi celebrates Africa Day in style

THE Department of Sport, Arts and Culture hosted the Africa Day celebration at Freedom Park in Tshwane on Sunday, 25 May 2025.
There were traditional dances and poems to entertain guests.
Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Peace Mabe said: “This occasion reminds us of a strength that lies in our unity, diversity, and shared humanity. A better Africa and world.
“Africa that provides economic opportunities for its youth and vulnerable groups within our societies,” she said.

She further said that it’s their commitment to build an inclusive global world that upholds the rule of law without fear or favour.
“This is a story of a continent that is transforming itself. All we need is a strong political leadership to achieve that mission. We have to be intentional and not just engage rhetorically. We must be inspired by the national anthem of the African Union. Let’s make Africa a tree of life,” she said.
Mabe said some key priorities are to come up with tangible sporting cultural programmes to commemorate SADC liberation annually on 23 March.

“Culture must be recognised as a cornerstone of rights based on inclusive and sustainable development. Building on the achievements of the past presidents whom I wish to sincerely thank. Together, we share the responsibility to carry this agenda forward,” she said.
Mabe further said their collective efforts must advance social justice, protection, and cultural rights.
Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko described the day as a special day on the African calendar.
“We pay tribute to our visionary leaders. We owe them immense gratitude for laying the seeds of unity,” she said.
Ambassador of Brazil and member of the G20 SA Presidency, Benedicto Fonseca, said: “We rejoice, respect and recognise the historical cultural in human times that unite us with the African continent. Brazil has African roots.”
Ambassador of the Central African Republic and Dean of the African Diplomatic Corp, Andre Nzapayake said: “Time has come to start seriously working on the building of what we call, the Africa we want.”
Tshwane Deputy Mayor Eugene Modise said: “We are tired of being undermined and disunited as Africans.”
Chief Mabhekaphezulu Khumalo said: “This is an important day for us. We are being reminded of who we are and where we are coming from. If a nation doesn’t understand its identity, it won’t understand its destiny.”
Dakalo Begwa, leader of Makonazwothe, said: “We are celebrating our culture and performing our Venda cultural dance.”
Mandy Makoti of Nakanjani Theatre Production said: “We are celebrating Africa Day. It means beauty for us. If we can unite as Africans, we can have a better continent. Let’s love one another and appreciate our cultures, traditions, and customs.”
