This was revealed by the owner of an apartment in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, where cops found Makhanya on Friday, 30 May.

Makhanya allegedly confessed that he didn’t mean to kill Olorato, but was looking for money. He allegedly asked the apartment owner to tell his mum his confession.

Makhanya died during a shoot-out with the cops. He allegedly escaped arrest on Thursday, 29 May when his mum tipped him off that the police were looking for him.

The apartment owner, who also rents out cars, said Makhanya wasn’t hiding in his apartment, but came to hire a car. However, he didn’t give Makhanya the car when he realised he was trending for murder.

“He called me wanting to hire a car like he did previously. He came with someone else in another car. He left his stuff and went to withdraw money.

“When he came back, I saw that his picture was posted on social media as a wanted murder suspect and I told him I can’t give him a car because he was a wanted suspect. He kept begging me, but I refused,” he said.

The apartment owner said Makhanya also threatened to commit suicide.

“He cried while we were at the parking bay, and I told him we should go to my house so that he could confess without interruptions. He confessed that it wasn’t his intention to kill the girl (Olorato), but he was looking for money and nothing more.

“Unfortunately, that turned out to be murder. He said she was the first person to die. He asked me to tell his mum his confession and that I won’t reveal his other confessions to the media,” he said.

He said Makhanya also told him that his mum warned him about crime and asked him to stop, but he didn’t listen.

The apartment owner said the suspect spent about three hours confessing to him.

“I was forced to calm him down because he already told me that he wanted to commit suicide after his confession. I was scared to even touch my phone because I didn’t know what would happen to me. I did not feel safe. He told me the main reason he was scared to go to jail was because he had many cases.

“I asked him to hand over himself at Amanzimtoti SAPS in the morning and he agreed and prayed. That’s when the police arrived and did their work,” he said.
