South African gospel legend Rebecca Malope will be honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Basadi in Music Awards, set to take place on August 2 at the Joburg Theatre.
Malope, known as “The Queen of Gospel,” expressed immense gratitude for the recognition, calling it “an honour” and “a blessing from God.”

Rebecca, whose full name is Batsogile Lovederia Malope, rose to fame in 1987 after winning the Shell Road to Fame competition with her breakout single Shine On. Since then, she has released over 36 albums and sold more than 10 million records globally, becoming a pillar in the South African music industry.

More Than Just Music
Beyond her powerful vocals and best-selling records, Malope has contributed to the industry in numerous ways. She hosted the popular show It’s Gospel Time for 15 years and served as a judge on Clash of the Choirs.
In 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa awarded her the Order of Ikhamanga for her outstanding contribution to the arts.
“To still be seen and celebrated after so many years in this industry is a great blessing from God,” she said.

A New Chapter in Fashion
Not one to rest on her laurels, Rebecca is stepping into a new creative space—fashion. She revealed that she’s working on her own clothing line and designing a special dress to commemorate her award.

“It’s not just a celebration of where I’ve been but of where I’m going,” she said, adding that she’s excited to bring fashion design into her life’s journey.
