Tragic Head-On Collision on N4 Toll Road Claims Seven Lives, Including a Toddler

A devastating head-on collision between two vehicles on the N4 Toll Road between Belfast and Wonderfontein in Mpumalanga claimed the lives of seven people on Tuesday afternoon, including a toddler believed to be just two years old.

Accident Details

The accident occurred around 2 p.m., with early investigations suggesting that one of the vehicles lost control, veered off the road, and collided head-on with an oncoming car.

According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, five of the deceased were passengers in one sedan, while the remaining two fatalities were from the other vehicle. Tragically, the drivers of both cars were among those killed.

“One seriously injured occupant from one of the vehicles was rushed to the nearest hospital,” said Mmusi.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash, but reckless and negligent driving has not been ruled out as a possible factor.

MEC Appeals for Road Safety

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed his deep regret over the tragic loss of lives, emphasizing the preventability of many road accidents.

“The N4 Toll Road is one of our priority routes. While we continue implementing plans to reduce fatal crashes, motorists must also play their part by obeying road rules and practicing caution,” Macie stated.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured individual a speedy recovery.
