“Survivor Speaks Out: Brutal Assault by Ex-Boyfriend Sparks Outrage Against Gender-Based Violence”
A young woman has come forward with a harrowing account of abuse at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, identified as Phumlani Songxishe. According to her statement, the relationship ended when Songxishe told her he was getting back together with a former partner. When he later attempted to reconcile and she refused, his behavior allegedly turned violent and obsessive.
The survivor recalls that on the day of the attack, she was sitting peacefully with a friend at a local tavern near her home when Songxishe appeared. He allegedly dragged her away by force, insisting that she would remain his partner regardless of what he did with other women. She says he threatened to kill her if she ever refused him again.
In a chilling turn, she claims he assaulted her using multiple weapons — a golf stick, a hammer, and a spanner attached to the butt of a spear from his classroom. “I did nothing wrong and I’m asking for justice,” she said.
Emergency services rescued her from the scene, after which police arrested the suspect. She was taken to the hospital for treatment. The survivor explained that she initially remained silent about the incident because she feared speaking out might affect the legal case.
Her bravery in sharing her story has reignited public outrage over gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa, an issue that continues to claim lives and shatter communities. Advocacy groups are urging the justice system to ensure that perpetrators face full accountability and that survivors receive the support they need to heal.
