THELMA Varrie wants justice for her son.
Her son, Robbert Varrie, who was a suspected drug dealer, died in July 2023 after an interrogation by the Sizok’thola crew, and he was allegedly assaulted.
Sizok’thola presenter Xolani Khumalo was arrested in connection with the murder of Robbert.
Xolani was facing charges of murder, robbery, and property damage.
However, the charges against him were provisionally withdrawn when he appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in Ekurhuleni on 14 April.
State prosecutor Advocate Albert Dwera said the charges were provisionally withdrawn pending the ongoing investigation.
Thelma (74) said in July 2025, it will be two years since her son was allegedly beaten to death.
She said it’s sad that her son allegedly died at the hands of Sizok’thola’s Khumalo and his crew, but till this day the crew members were never arrested.
“As far as I’m concerned, the investigating officer didn’t do his job, and my four daughters are not satisfied with what he has done so far because all the evidence is there.
“These people took away my son, a father, and a brother. The way he was killed doesn’t sit well with me because at the end of the day, he was also a human being,” said Thelma.
She said the investigating officer should do a proper job and get all the evidence so that the matter can be solved.
“This will help us as a family to get closure.
“My son’s daughter turned two years old in April. She’s growing up without a father, and it’s hard, especially for her mother, who must struggle to raise two children alone,” said Thelma.
She said the family wants justice because at this stage, it seems things are falling apart.
“At the end of the day, my son died. His life was allegedly taken by Xolani, the Sizok’thola crew.
“Xolani was the only one arrested. What happened to the crew who were there? They took away my son’s life.
“They allegedly assaulted him and later dumped his body at the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital,” said Thelma.
She said Robbert couldn’t have inflicted all those injuries to himself.
“I’m disappointed that the case was provincially withdrawn.
“Justice must be served, and those who are behind the death of my son should be punished,” added Thelma.
