“I CAN’T believe God let that happen to me.”
These were the words of singer Kaylow, reflecting on the car accident that left him on crutches.
The 38-year-old artist, born Kelello Segoana from Soweto, spent months in hospital following the crash in September 2024.
Renowned for hits such as 24 Hours, Soul Café, Nothing Better, and Greatest Love, Kaylow revealed that the crash shattered his pelvis into pieces.
“My legs were separated from my upper body. You have known as a person, you can say you lack somewhere I trusted my body, it was one thing that I knew that I was sure of.”
He said the accident broke him badly.
“Even now, I ask myself what will happen if people come attack me. Will I be the same person?” he said.
The singer said he died and came back.
“They wanted to certify me dead, but I just woke up. I went to the other side. I don’t remember anything.”
Kaylow said he remembers his family coming to visit him in hospital, and he found himself apologising to them.
“I was saying I’m sorry because I know how much they depend on me, and I kind of had a feeling that I’m not going to be there as much as I’d like to be there.”
He said he couldn’t believe that God let that happen.
“When we pray, we pray that such things don’t happen to us.
“I still can’t see a lesson in it. I wasn’t even myself. I was driving really calm. I drive, but that day I was driving very chilled, and I still battle with it sometimes,” he said.
Kaylow said as much as he has accepted, he has challenges.
“There are days where it’s hard to be alive. As a man you need to know where your source of strength comes from and look around at the people who depend on you that even on days when you don’t want to carry on, let them be the reason,” he said.
