Tragedy on R42: Toddler Among Six Killed in Horrific Meyerton Crash
A tragic road accident on the R42 Heidelberg Road near Meyerton has claimed the lives of six people, including a three-year-old child, leaving the local community reeling in grief.
The fatal crash occurred on the morning of July 14 and involved a collision between a Ford Focus and a heavy-duty truck. Police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened and investigations are currently underway.NAccording to Constable Nompumelelo Zazini, spokesperson for the Gauteng SAPS, emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the wreckage of the light motor vehicle, which had sustained severe damage. All six occupants of the Ford Focus — including three adult women, two adult men, and a toddler — were declared dead at the scene.
“The Ford Focus was allegedly attempting to overtake the truck when the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to a head-on collision,” said Constable Zazini. “Sadly, all six people inside the car died on impact.”

The truck driver survived the crash and is currently receiving medical attention. Authorities have not released the names of the victims as their next of kin are still being notified.
Emergency personnel worked tirelessly to clear the accident scene, and the bodies of the deceased were transported to Sebokeng Mortuary for post-mortem examinations. Traffic on the R42 was disrupted for several hours following the collision as investigators and forensic experts combed through the area for evidence.
The South African Police Service is urging witnesses or anyone with additional information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
This tragic incident has reignited public concern over reckless driving and road safety, especially on busy regional roads like the R42, which connects several towns in southern Gauteng. Local residents and commuters frequently express concern over speeding and dangerous overtaking practices, which have been linked to numerous accidents in the past.
Community members have taken to social media to express condolences and share their grief over the lives lost in what many describe as a preventable accident. Several families are now left mourning loved ones who, according to neighbors, were all headed to the same destination on the morning of the crash.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to road safety regulations, especially when overtaking on high-speed roads. “One wrong move on the road can have irreversible consequences,” added Constable Zazini.
The Meyerton tragedy comes amid a series of recent accidents across Gauteng, further highlighting the urgent need for increased road safety campaigns and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
As the community mourns, officials urge motorists to prioritize safety, remain vigilant behind the wheel, and avoid unnecessary risks.
Funeral arrangements for the victims are yet to be confirmed.
