WATCH: Crash claims workers’ lives
THREE workers from a logistics company were killed in a horrific road accident.
The crash happened on the R44 near Wellington, just outside Cape Town, on Monday night, 12 May.
The victims were travelling in a staff transport taxi when the driver lost control of the vehicle at about 5pm. The vehicle veered off the road, hit a concrete pillar of a stormwater drain, and plunged into the ditch. The crash occurred on a rural farming area.
Motorist Gibson Chimombe (53) said the front of the Toyota Quantum was stuck inside the drain when he drove past.
“I didn’t stop at the scene as there were police and ambulances attending to it, but it looked terrible. I knew that people would not be able to survive the accident,” said Chimombe, who suspects the driver may have been speeding and failed to negotiate a curve.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the incident.
“Paarl SAPS members attended to an accident scene on the R44 Windmeul Road on Monday, 12th May at approximately 5.5pm. A Toyota Quantum belonging to a logistics company in Stikland was found at the scene with the three occupants declared dead on the scene by emergency services.
“According to reports, the driver of the vehicle had lost control and collided against a cement bridge. All three deceased were employees of the logistics company. A culpable homicide case has been opened for investigation,” said Van Wyk.
Billy Classen from the Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation conveyed condolences to the families of the dead.
