What really happened?

Many South Africans are wondering what truly happened to Maka Thangithini.

The questions arose after the comedian, whose real name is Simthande, claimed he was kidnapped and robbed of his cash and clothes on Tuesday, 17 June.

The 28-year-old comedian and actor said he had requested a Bolt ride in Durban, KZN.

A harrowing tale of kidnapping and robbery

While he was inside the vehicle, two men allegedly joined the trip, and he was kidnapped, forced to withdraw money, stripped of his clothes, and inappropriate photos were taken of him.

Following the alleged incident, Mzansi sympathised with him, launching crowdfunding campaigns to offer financial support and assist him in recovering from his reportedly traumatic experience.

However, this situation has raised doubts among many South Africans regarding what truly happened.

Meanwhile, Bolt South Africa has denied any connection to the incident.

They said their data indicates the events described did not take place during one of their rides.

Bolt has also hinted at possible legal action against any defamatory claims made against the company.

The mysterious deletion of Simthande’s Facebook page

In a surprising move, Simthande’s verified Facebook page, which had a significant following due to his comic content as Maka Thangithini, an older rural woman, has disappeared.

This is the same platform he used to share his kidnapping story with the public.

It is not clear whether he deleted the page or if it was reported to Facebook.

The disappearance of the page remains unexplained, leaving many people questioning what is truly happening.

Bolt’s data contradicts kidnapping details

Commenting on the matter, Lerato Motsoeneng, senior general manager of Bolt South Africa, reiterated that their data confirms the incident did not occur during a Bolt trip.

ā€œWe also have strong reason to believe that the drivers who took trips from locations relevant to the incident had nothing to do with the incident.

ā€œAccording to verified trip data and platform records, Mr Myeza requested a Bolt ride on the afternoon of 17 June at 3.03pm. Bolt algorithm always matches riders and drivers in real-time based on a number of factors, which means that the driver would not have had prior knowledge of the rider’s identity before the match occurred,ā€ he said.

Motsoeneng stated that the trip was completed by a driver-partner, with the drop-off point recorded as approximately 114 metres from the originally requested location.

ā€œThis falls within the expected margin of GPS accuracy. We can confirm that the rider and driver were alone in the vehicle. We subsequently checked the driver’s details and found that he has been driving using the Bolt app since December 2024.

ā€œMr Myeza said in a media statement that the incident took place around 8pm the same evening. Our records do not show any Bolt trip activity associated with him during that time. The return trip was mentioned in social media posts and was also identified. There was a different driver than the first trip, ordered from a different rider account. The driver was matched to the order the same way, following our matching algorithm, meaning that the driver could not have prior knowledge of who would order the ride,ā€ he said.

Motsoeneng added that they have officially shared their findings with the relevant authorities and committed to fully cooperating with them.

Simthande’s sister, Lomsongaka confirmed that Simthande’s Facebook page has disappeared, but said she didn’t know what happened to it.

ā€œSimthande is going through a lot, but we have heard that Bolt is denying that he requested their ride, and Simthande will share his side of the story soon.

ā€œWe will meet as a family and see how he’ll share his side of the story because he has to clear the air,ā€ she said.

KZN police confirm case inquiry

After the incident, KZN police confirmed that Simthande opened a kidnapping case.

The case updates will be provided as soon as they become available.
